As a number of cities around the world, Berlin is tackling future challenges with the opportunities offered by information and communication technologies. Their targeted use will make our city more efficient, healthier, more sustainable, more livable and clean.

The Smart City Strategy, which was adopted on April 21 by the Berlin Senate, focuses on the following areas of activity: management and urban society, housing, economy, mobility, infrastructure and public safety. In addition, several cross-cutting issues need to be considered, such as demographic change, social integration, resource efficiency, innovation orientation and digitalization.

Berlin sees itself as an intelligent city in many ways and has therefore committed to the concept of smart cities. But what makes cities "smart" and thus fit for the future? To the understanding of Berlin, future oriented cities achieve a much higher standard and stable quality of life with the same or fewer resources.

More than 300 research groups and research companies are working in Berlin on projects for the city of tomorrow. In addition Berlin is also committed on a political level: In April 2015, the Berlin Senate decided to the Smart City Strategy. Whose objectives include, among others increasing resource efficiency and climate neutrality of Berlin as well as the creation of a pilot market for innovative applications.

In addition to the activities of politics and administration, the Network Smart City Berlin has formed. More than 20 companies, scientific and research institutions joined on the initiative of Berlin Partner GmbH of Economics and Technology and the TSB. Their goal is to promote Berlin as a Smart City and to make it one of the leading smart cities in Europe.
